Back on the bandwagon

Veg from the garden

The Vitatas bandwagon that is.

I've written about vitatas a few times, but what you don't know is that I stopped getting mine in May when we were getting more things in the bag that we didn't like as compared to things that we did like.

Sadly, since then I've had to choose my vegetables myself and seeing as the vegetables are the focus of our meals, choosing is hard work.

I get to plan the meals, buy the food, choose from a sometimes limp selection, clean the vegetables, cook the meal, clean up after the meal and endure the complaints about the choices that were made for the meal. This way I can blame the choice of vegetables on someone else 'Oh you don't like witlof, too bad, it was in the veggie bag!' Simple, easy and I'm not guilty for any misery that might follow.

So today I went back to the natuurwinkel and ordered my vitatas combi and vitatas fruit for this coming Thursday.

This week's combi bag contains two kinds of lettuce, broccoli, chinese cabbage, fennel, tomatoes, celery, pears, charentais melon and mixed peppers. The fruit bag contains peaches, pears, apricots and melon.

One less choice to make! What a relief!

The photo up top is of our own homegrown new potatoes, some gemsquash and a giant yellow courgette donated by my neighbour. We've also had peas, redcurrants, blackcurrants, rhubarb, and strawberries. The apple tree has a promising harvest, as does the plum tree. I pulled all our shallots on Thursday so that they can dry. We have some localised flooding going on so it was best that they were out and not in. Now to choose what to plant in their place.

You can always keep up with my garden over here.

Hope everyone is having a fine weekend!

Good grief, I hope you don't actually get that many complaints from your wonderful dinners, Ash! I do agree that the veggie/fruit bags would be a big help in meal planning ... sigh.

Gosh that's an idea! That bandwagon is still a bit limp in this house...mom isn't willing to pull it after 4 days of freedom!
Love the treasures from your garden.

how wonderful to not have to make choices! I think it is fantastic that you will become a florist! I think there is nothing more exciting than making a living through creativity. I know how beautifully the dutch do their floristry. Melly and I will be coming to Holland in November and we are so excited to see the family again. Thanks for your blog. It is a great read!

The organic fruit/veg bag sounds great. I tried it once here in Dublin and was disappointed with the results (quality and quantity vs price were not up to scratch).

I have to ask you - how did you find growing the gem squash? Do they take up much space? What was the yield per plant?

I have a tiny backyard but we do grow quite a bit in it, I have steered clear of pumpkins and squash though as I know they can take up quite a bit of space.

Re the witloof - do you eat the root as well? If so, how do you prepare it?

We only get the forced top here and the only way I really enjoy eating that is sliced in half, seasoned with salt and pepper and grilled on the braai/bbq. Served drizzled with a good vinegar it is rather nice. Radicchio gets the same treatment here and is equally as good, if a touch more bitter.

That is so awesome you are gardening! It has been a while since I've been here.
How is the new way of eating going?
