Paasontbijt/Easter Breakfast at School

Yesterday was the Paasontbijt (Easter breakfast) at school. Such fun for the kids!

A few weeks ago we got a wishlist for another child in the class. The idea was that each child should make something for another child in the class and experience what it's like to give and receive, etc.

This year was the first year that the kids had to take breakfast for someone else. Previously they only had to take their own breakfast. I think this way is nicer and more fun for them.

The children take their breakfast to school in some kind of home-made basket and eat it with the class in a decorated room, in the tradition of the Last Supper.

Paasontbijt at school is traditionally held on Maundy Thursday, or as it's called in Holland, Witte Donderdag.

The lists we got were really easy. One child wanted white bread with hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles) and the other wanted white bread with chocolate spread. No effort required there!

I made the little baskets from that Easter magazine I wrote about ages ago and lined them with an Easter serviette.

After they had breakfast the children had an easter egg hunt. Next they had limonade (squash or cooldrink) with cookies and then more Easter excitement - stories, crafts, activities - for the rest of the day.

Luckily I was released from duty after the limonade and cookies!

I really like the idea of the kids making the breakfast for another child. Here, the parents all bring in various dishes and the kids have a sort of buffet. The love it. Last night, Nicky demanded 'paasontbijt' for dinner. ;)

Hey, you guys have a great Easter! We'll be off in Limburg, sucking down the fresh air. LOL!

That is so nice! We had something similar in our school once for Christmas and it was a success!

Oh cool. My kids had paasontbijt too, but I love the giving/receiving swing they gave it at the school of your boys.

At my school they have the buffet kind of thing with Christas dinner (I try to make things that the kids can help with).

Easter breakfast is actually done by the oldest group (11/12 yo's, group 8) for the rest of the school. They get a class assigned per group of approximately 3 kids, and decorate, helpt de teachers set out the tables, and arrange breakfast items. Usually they get sponsored by the local supermarket for things like eggs, and reciprocate by cleaning in the shop for a few hours. I like the 'community' feel that kind of actions give.

Everybody has easter breakfast in their pyjama's, including teachers, which the kids love too.
