V is for Vendetta and Egyptian Eggs

Egyptian Eggs

Last night we watched V for Vendetta. Well, the Husband watched it mostly.

I made the mistake of lying down on the couch. As soon as I assumed the horizontal my eyes closed and alas, that could have been the end of V for Vendetta for me.

However, in the middle of the film I was rudely awakened by Joe not making it to the toilet in time, so in between mopping up wee and being aggravated at my evening couch time being disturbed I got to see some of the film.

Stephen Fry* was excellent, as was Stephen Rea, who I still can't watch without remembering seeing The Crying Game in a theatre in Harare and watching, bemused, as half the audience walked out in disgust. I guess time had not moved on for them.

The story itself was excellent, but Husband and I are still a bit surprised that it was actually allowed to be made and shown, considering as how it's about encouraging people to confront their governments on relevant issues.

Is our civilisation that far down the road to destruction that one actually wonders when watching a film why it wasn't censored?

Anyway, onto happier topics, and isn't food the happiest topic ever?

While watching the film we were reminded twice about Egyptian eggs!

I haven't had these since I was a child and due to a very loud party held next door until god-knows-what time in the morning, Husband and I woke up feeling hungover.

It sucks you know, we don't drink, yet we get to feel hungover. How crap is that?

What do you do when you feel hungover? You make a fried breakfast.

Egyptian eggs and bacon it was. Followed by fruit of course, one has to feel virtuous at least some of the time!

Here's how you make them:

  1. Heat a bit of oil in a non-stick pan, or cook the bacon first so that the bacon fat stays in the pan.
  2. Use as many slices of bread and as many eggs as you have people to feed.
  3. Cut a hole in the centre of each slice of bread with a cookie cutter. You can make shapes, I just made circles.
  4. Cook the bread slightly on one side.
  5. For Husband and Son #1 I used oil in the pan for this bit, for myself I wanted it more like a toasted slice of bread than fried bread, so I just browned the bread in the pan without oil.
  6. Turn the bread over and break an egg into the centre.
  7. Put a cover over the pan to allow the top of the egg to steam slightly. I like mine sunny side up, so I would just serve them this way once the top had cooked. Husband and Son like them over easy so I turn the slices of bread over for them and cook the other side a bit.
  8. Serve with bacon and a dose of Egyptian history. It helps to have researched the Eye of Horus before you serve breakfast.
Here is a very comprehensive Egyptian Egg article which also mentions V for Vendetta!
*A note about Stephen Fry. We watched a documentary entitled The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive, that he presented, being a sufferer himself, and found it fascinating.

It was so interesting to watch him wrestle with himself and his feelings, and to see him discuss all the facets of the disease with a range of people, from doctors and psychiatrists to people who suffer from the disease themselves.

We missed it on the BBC the first time but managed to tape it on the Belgian channel, Canvas. It will be shown again on BBC Two this coming Monday and Tuesday, 12/13 March 2007.

I think the film is good when you haven't read the book. I liked the film as a film, but I was really impressed by the book (though it takes effort reading it, the drawing is hard to follow sometimes).

What's more illustrative for the time is when characters from action-series have to visit the troops to tell them that torture really is not good and that tv is not real life, like the bloke from 24 had to do a few months ago...

I'm definately going to try the eggs ;)

Oh, wow, what a memory rush! I had a boyfriend who called these One-Eyed Egyptians (I'd never heard of or seen them before) and he'd whip up a batch after a hard night out playing pool and drinking pitchers. (This was a long time ago, okay?!)

I like the sound of these eggs. I have to say that your movie-watching state is very like mine - a film has to be pretty good for me to see the end. We watched Saving Grace on DVD last night which I did see through to the end, great quirky English movie.

I loved V for Vandetta. But then I love movies that poke a finger at today's world and say, Watch out!!

We make eggs like that for our girls - they love them. We call them Popeye's, though.

"I made the mistake of lying down on the couch. As soon as I assumed the vertical my eyes closed"

Surely you mean horizontal ???
Or do you live in an Escher world ?
