Melly & Me's Scrappy Quilt Challenge

Quilt in Progress

I happened across this today and had to share!

Australian sisters Rosalie Quinlan and Melanie Hurlston of Melly & Me have invited us all to a Scrappy Quilt Challenge. Not only is there a flickr group, but also a wonderful step by step guide to foundation piecing a log cabin square.

What a great time saver - no more strip cutting, and perfect squares every time. I've written before about my love/hate relationship with log cabin squares. Maybe this method will make me love them more?

I'm hauling my scraps out and I'm going to give this a try. I love the look of log cabin squares, and even though I have two quilts in a state of ....err... unfinishedness ... I can't resist a challenge.

You can see one of the unfinished quilts above. It needs quilting and then it will become our picnic blanket for the summer. I hope to make a bag to match it from Denyse Schmidt's book. Note I said 'hope to make' not 'will make', 'promise to make' or any other sentence that may provide stress!

Can you resist a challenge? I certainly can't!

You are going to use a handmade quilt for a picnic blanket?? That would last all of one picnic with my creatures - are yours neater or do you know some voodoo washing magic??

Ash: no voodoo magic, I just want it to be used! It's a scrappy one that I made from little bits and pieces and it didn't come out quite as I had envisaged it :)

That's beautiful! Are you going to quilt it or tie it?

Ash: this is one of the unfinished ones! I'm further with it than the picture shows, about halfway through quilting it . I decided I didn't like the pattern I had done. Bit late now, not going to unpick half a mile of machine quilting! It really just needs a day's work and the binding and it will be done. I had best get a move on with it!

O you're brave and you must have a lot of patience to make such a quilt. I started one -a long time ago- but never had enough dicipline to finish it...it became 'rommeliger' with every square.

Every time I see one of those log cabin quilts I fall in love with it. And then I think of all the measuring involved.... like Lien said I miss discipline and I am "rommelig" as well..
Maybe I should try again http://bakemyday.blogspot.com/2006/04/memories-and-cushions.html? Scraps enough around here.

I'm totally into scrap quilts. I'm just making one this week though not a cabin. I'm much more into the strips and strings etc. Hope you have fun emptying your scraps.
