Granny Squares and Ripple Stitches

Granny Squares

Being a person who finds it difficult to waste, and coming from a family where every little bit of anything gets used up, or kept for another time, I've been making granny squares from left over yarn for ages.

I made two sweaters for Sebastian when he was 3, and the leftover Rowan all-seasons cotton contributed these coral and pale blue squares. Then there was left over blue yarn from a sweater that the Mother-in-law knitted for him about three years ago which contributed the darker blue. I have 9 each of the coral and pale blue and another ball of the darker blue to make into squares.

And overnight, it seems, the internet is going crazy for crocheted throws.

There's the ripple stitch blankets as seen at Yarnstorm and Posie gets Cozy.

Yvestown has this wonderful blanket which she bought on ebay.

Cath Kidston has a new granny-square blanket in her catalogue for a massive £160, which is inspiring Posy to start her own.

Then there's the crochet ripple along.

Simmy's daughter, Amber has started crocheting granny squares.

Small Hands is foresaking quilting temporarily to make a granny square afghan and Hanna shows her beautiful scarf.

I've asked my aunt to make me a ripple stitch blanket. While searching for patterns I found this list of free afghan patterns. There's a link on there to this ripple stitch pattern which looks perfect and this link shows different variations on the granny square. Wonderful for those scraps of yarn!

Which brings me in a roundabout way to another topic.

This whole internet serendipity thing can get a bit embarrassing.

I was scrolling through Alicia's blog to find the ripple stitch afghan photos so I could link them in, and what did I find instead?

Andy's photos for how to roll a spring roll!

I didn't see this the first time around, or maybe I did and it didn't register or perhaps it came up in the feedreader and I scrolled through. Whatever, it makes my spring roll folding post a little redundant now, especially when it's been done so much better before!

There was an episode of the Outer Limits about idea dissemination, or, as they called it 'creative resonance'. Perhaps creative resonance resonates more with people who are actually creative?

Then of course, there's the 'been there, done that, had that idea.' which we have a lot in our family. Probably because both adults in our home are information junkies.

Sometimes Brad comes home and says 'did you see that thing on the Makeblog about ...?' and I'm like 'yup.' and that's it. The conversation is over.

There is nothing to talk about anymore. What's even weirder is when one of us thinks that we have something new and interesting to tell the other and then we find out that, no, actually the other one subscribes to whatever feed that information came from.

So, when we're 45 and have nothing to say to each other we know who to blame.

RSS, you killed our marriage!

LOL we have the 'yup' conversation over thing sometimes too :P

You are so crafty, love the squares. I made about 12 or so when I was pregnant and then lost interest...

If you ever feel bored and feel like knitting why don't you knit me a **uterus** ?

I am not joking, I really want a pink knitted uterus (and a cloth baby with umbilical chord and placenta to go inside it!).

Bet you didn't know people knitted uteruses/uteri whatever more than one is called ;p

p.s. I had such a laugh when the old bat who is hosting our doula course said, 'sorry but my vagina is old, dirty and stretched' LMAO (and yes she did mean the knitted one, but it may apply to both)

I'm kind of reeling from the knitted uterus comment above. I forgot what I was going to say. Um.

Oh, we have the yup conversation sometimes, too. :( Sometimes I think it would help to live apart or something for a few days, just to have some new stuff happen that can be talked about. Or phone conversations with your other half ... remember those? We used to talk for ages on the phone. sigh...

Just found your blog this morning -- through a reference to stroopwafels over at SouleMama, I think! Enjoying a glimpse of your life in Holland. I'm of Dutch ancestry and have a couple of (unmet) cousins back there in the flower market.

My mother was a big crocheter and taught me when I was small. I never advanced beyond simple scarves and granny squares but granny squares are so colorful and charming, they're an END in themselves.

Ah, another Posie fan! We share the same married name, but alas our husbands are not related, lol!

TG for images...granny squares? Okay that would be the bed throw my granny (yep!) made me back in the 70's, in purple/green/lilac.
Knitted uterus? OMG. They are for real! So glad they didn't use them when I was pregnant with the twins, I would have gone into labour spontaneously, at the spot, rofl. No anasthesia needed! I keep imagining nurses trying to explain to me how these twins were going to come out...bottoms first (which they actually did), using a pink knitted sack...

Erm, you guys are doing a good job of deterring me from every having kids with this knitted uterus thingy!! :o)

And LOL about the yup conversation. I hate it when that happens!

Btw, you've been tagged!

i there,

I did a search on google for crochet ripple patterns, and your blog came near the top. Funnily enough, you referred to a blog I already read (Posie Gets Cozy) but also listed loads of blogs that were new to me. So, I just wanted to say hello, and thank you. And I'm sure in the next few days I will be reading more of your posts.
