What can I tell you today?

January 29, 2007 at 1:21 PM

by Ashleigh

Wouldn't it be nice to sit down and have a coffee together? How about in a chic Amsterdam boutique cafe? I'd have a Latte Macchiato, which is my favourite. Maybe with some chocolate dipped biscotti. What would you have?

Ok, so we can't really meet and have coffee. Instead, let me tell you all about my week.

I'll tell you ...

  • That Friday a week ago I had surgery with general anaesthetic and even though I can do most things now, it still hurts. I was going to tell you all about it but it's tooooo icky. If you want to know about it leave a comment and I'll mail you.

Let's just say I now know that Dutch hospitals do give heavy duty drugs when they think you need it (note the emphasis). I also know how crap it feels to have those oxygen tubes in your nose!

  • That Seb played with his little team in a football match on Saturday against a bunch of giants! Seriously, our kids are 5 and 6 and some of the opposing team were 10 years old and almost as big as me. Can you say 'cheating'? Yes, Legmeervogels, I'm talking about you! They did very well though and only lost 6 - 3. Which is considerably better than it could have been.
  • That, while I was recovering from the surgery I did no ironing at all and this is what faces me tomorrow. Sex & the City here I come! Oh, and the series lined up for after S&TC is Gilmore Girls. Thanks for all the tv watching suggestions!

  • That we visited the Naturalis Museum in Leiden yesterday and it was fun. The museum itself is gorgeous and we have Museum Cards so it didn't cost us anything to visit. They have a section called 'Kijke Aarde' for the little kids which is so cute - there are animatronic animals for the children to feed with special 'fruits' that the animals recognise. When the child proffers an incorrect food choice the animal shakes it's head, and when the correct foodstuff is offered he opens his mouth! Joe loved that. Seb was captivated with all the interactive displays.

I'm afraid they were so overcome with the coolness of learning all these things that they became completely oblivious to their parents leading to a bit of shouting from time to time.

The museum's current temporary exhibition is on Extreme Weather and some of the displays there were pretty cool. Ice walls, machines to show the effects of windchill, machines to show how hot dry air dries sweat faster than hot humid air. The boys were happy with their outing. These photos are of them in their pyjamas before we left.

  • That I signed Sebastian in for one of the workshops at the van Gogh Museum. If you book far enough in advance your child can attend a 1.5 hour workshop for the sum of 4 euros!
  • That I signed myself up for a NT2 (Nederlands Taal 2) course with a local college. I get to go and have my Dutch level tested on 8 February. If it's good enough I don't have to do the course, but can just show up for the exam!
  • That my car went in for a service and the cheeky mechanic called my husband to ask him about the car instead of ringing me! I gave him an earful when I spoke to him later and said that it was very rude to assume that I didn't know anything about my car and that my husband did! Cheeky guy! He's kind of cute though (the mechanic) so I wasn't too hard on him ;)
  • That this Wednesday is a free day from school for the kids.
  • That we've been eating too much and are now on a diet. It has something to do with all the food I've been making, like Jamie Oliver's Chicken Pie. Smaller portions people, smaller portions!

  • That my hyacinths that I planted outdoors in the autumn are blooming. I brought them indoors when they started budding. Aren't they pretty?

  • That I bought a whole lot of board games on ebay. All this for £6! The postage was £28 but it's still cheaper than buying them new and I'm recycling, right?

  • That I bought a very expensive pair of boots from Ecco and I'm taking them back, they're just not 'me'. Plus see recycling and trying to cut down on spending as above.
  • That the Reluctant Husband fixed Mr Dyson who had a hairball clogging up his works. Mr Dyson and I can now become intimately reacquianted whilst battling dustbunnies in the kids' bedroom.
  • That I've been reading about a friend's travels on Travellia. She has lots to say about some really cool places and great tips too on how to save money when travelling. Go take a look and leave a comment!
  • And finally, look what I got in a 'verassingstas' from Oil & Vinegar? I love these things, it's a surprise bag that you pay a set price for - starting from E5 and running to E20 - and you get a selection of goodies. You don't know what they are until you open the bag! I love it! This time I got really useful stuff too, so I'm happy.

Now it's your turn. Go on, tell me something!

Hmm. I hope you are feeling better. I don't envy your ironing load!

*I was thinking more of cafe latte in Amstelveen rather than Amsterdam actually...but hey that can wait...*

Get well soon. *Nose tube sounds painful*

Hugs. Nina

My goodness, Ash, you've had an incredibly full week!

If we're meeting up, I'll take an herbal tea and one of those biscotti. I've done childcare, me-care, animal care, studying, testing, working out, and a few other things. The most exciting moment was running out of gas with Max. It'll be a funny story someday! :)

Oooh, so sorry to hear about the surgery and the pain. But ironing with good tv is a good thing. It will make the chore more bearable. Right?
And yay for great eBay finds! :)

Ash, I cried the first time I awoke after a General Anaesthetic - I was so glad to be alive (the op was having my wisdom teeth out! I have a bit of a thing about hospitals)
Hope you are feeling well soon - a gentle hug all the way from Australia.

oh the ironing...maybe you can fold some of it very "netjes" and go sit on it while you iron the rest that has to be done...
Good idea? No?

SURGERY!! Oh my .... hope you are much better & so sorry to hear of your medical challenge. your ironing looks like mine -- and I just have a cold [krappy one - but I don't feel like household tasks]

Beautiful flowers. We have very cold weather right now -- no flowers in the ground ... only in the grocery store!
