Weirdness - tagged!

As if I didn't share enough weirdness with my 'truth and lie' post the other day, I have been tagged by Nina to share 6 weird things about me.

Hmm, where shall I start?

  1. I had an extra bone in my foot removed when I was 10. Called an accessory navicular, apparently this is a genetic flaw, so I can expect one of my children to have it.
  2. I sucked my thumb until I was 5. While we were on holiday my aunt took me to the Aquarium in Durban and terrified me by telling me that if I didn't stop sucking my thumb my jaw would elongate like a swordfish's. Then she told me that I'd have to roll my teeth up to put them back into my mouth every night to sleep and roll them out to eat things. I never ever sucked my thumb again!
  3. I don't like ants or other crawling bugs. Especially ants. When I was about 13 and in boarding school the window was left open next to my bed in the dorm. When I came back from prep at around 10 pm to go to bed the lights were off and I climbed into my bed without looking. It was full of rose beetles. It made a lasting impression. I really don't like bugs much.
  4. I was embraced by a cheetah when I was 11. My parents knew people who owned a game farm. I even remember the name of it - Barrowdale Farm. They had a tame cheetah called Wonder who wandered (haha) the garden. I was walking across to fetch my 4 year old brother when Wonder ran up behind me and flung his paws over my shoulders. Luckily I froze to the spot and his owner came to get him, but not before he gently ran his claws down my back, ripping my dress and leaving me with very fine scars. The worst part of it was that Wonder grew ill a few weeks later and died. My dad told me that it was because he scratched me and I was obviously a noxious person and thus I had poisoned the cheetah! I felt responsible for years!
  5. I find it incredibly difficult to relate to children that are older than whatever the current age of my own children is. Younger children are fine, I know what to expect, but older children are a mystery. I'm actually a bit scared of them.
  6. I am naive. It's only now that I'm in my 30s that I realise, or recognise that other people don't view the world with the same sort of naivete that I do. It's changing now, and I am more suspicious of people's motives, but I feel rather sad about it. Like I'm finally growing up and losing my innocence.

I'm not tagging anyone for this but if you want to bare all and share your own particular brand of weirdness, please do!

Wow, those are some of the most unusual facts I've read by the people doing this. And no more bugs, please!!! >

Relating to older children ... I'm truly scared to talk to teenagers. Stupid, huh? I had such a rotten adolescence that I'm sure they'll sense that about me and be mean. Some grownup I am, huh?

Wow, you mean I'm not the only one who doesn't know what to do with older kids? Here I was thinking I was alone. Thanks for sharing your weirdness with the world!

Hmmm, my five-year-old still stucks her thumb and I see dentistry looming in her future. Perhaps I should also use the swordfish trick ... did it traumatise you or would you recommend it?

As for the hugged by a cheetah thing, even as a fellow African, I do find that weird.

Hi, Thanks for being a sport!

BTW, I cannot stand the sght nor thought of snakes, eels, slugs and worms (basically anything legless)!!! Eeks. I could literally pass out if anybody ever put any of those horrid creatures near me... Should see me avoiding the pavements in winter (slugs and worms...)...

I also cannot relate to kids who are older than mine. Hmmm.

Sounds like you have some really mean family members that traumatized you for years. :)

I loved the line - "that I realise, or recognise that other people don't view the world with the same sort of naivete that I do." That made me chuckle. Thanks for sharing!

I can't relate to any age child!

My weird thing: on my toast I have marmite and Sandwich Spread - that is how my dad warped me as a child.

Embraced by a cheetah! A boarding school bed full of bugs. I'm thinking you are the main character from Power of One...

I was hugged by a boxer (not the male but the dog....) when I was two, it left scars, not visible but to this day I am so very ridiculously scared of dogs.

Thumbsucking is a very faint memory..I don't like to smile on photo's, nuff said....

I think I can relate to children older than my own, let me tell you that is worse! Reminds me of my dad, reciting the Top 40 to let us know he was "in the know" brrr.

And hey, naivete is goood!

Jo? Marmite nd Sandwich spread? Okay, good, I am naive, remember?

I forgot: the creepy crawlers...
I can have mice, spiders, bugs, ants whatever but never ever expose me to caterpillars or creatures that move alike.

I was cracking up reading #2 about the swordish mouth! I wonder if it would work on my 6 year old.

(And sometimes I'm timid to talk to children older than mine, too! I thought it was just me!!)

Thanks for commenting on my blog. I, too, am amazed at the difference in school lunches. My children would starve if I didn't pack them more to eat. (I would have emailed you back, but Blogger doesn't give email addresses of commenters.)
