Bead Feast!

Melty Bead ornaments
We've been doing so much eating round here recently. So much that in a moment of panic yesterday I dragged Brad to the gym to alleviate a little of the 'fat-season' blues! It was good though, in that I now have an appointment with a trainer for Wednesday where we intend to work out a new plan for me that avoids my right achilles tendon while trying to strengthen the muscles that let it down. Maybe the fat season won' t have that much effect on me after all. The torment of being a girl who loves to cook and eat. Wah.

Just as an example, last night's dinner was baked potatoes, romanesco with cheese sauce, and pork fillet roasted on a bed of apples, creme fraiche and red onion. I had ideas of keeping the leftover pork to use as cold meat. Note, I said 'ideas' - we sort of stuffed ourselves. Nonetheless we worked it off with 2 hours of Sing Star, a badly kept secret in our house and one that means we never have any visitors ;)

Dinner tonight comes from the book of part of my post title, Nigella's 'Feast'. We finished watching Nigella's Christmas Kitchen - oh the flourishes, come hither looks and plummy accents were just too amusing. I think she was playing up to what every foreigner thinks a 'real' Englishwoman should sounds like. Tonight's menu is 'finger licking spare ribs' and 'salt and pepper wings' with salad and bread rolls. Yum. There will be finger licking, I promise.

As an aside, did you know that something like 70% of people in Britain admitted to licking the plate clean? Actually raising their plate to their lips and licking it clean? Bizarre.

The kids have been in such a state of excitement today that they can't settle on doing anything. Luckily I had these melty beads stashed away and we made a load of bead creatures which we strung on a garland for the tree. This is a great activity - all those fine motor skills getting a workout make you feel like a home educating superstar and the thing involves little to no mess. I love it!

I wish you and yours a very happy holidays and a wonderful year ahead. May it be everything you wanted, and more (even if you don't know what you want).

Hi Ashleigh

I have really enjoyed reading your blog over the last year. I think I got hooked after we both had the gallbladder surgery. My girls are 21, and twins 16. I can remember making the ornaments you just did. We made them for every occasion it seemed like one year. I hope your family has a great Christmas. I look forward to seeing some new stitching in 2007.

Our church has an afternoon Christmas party that precedes the family church service. A Godsend. The afternoon goes fast. They played games, painted votive holders and made wreaths and candle rings out of fresh greenery before settling down for sandwiches, crisps, and a bit of yule log before church. Yum.

I hope you and your family had a very merry Christmas! It looks like you are one of the supermoms who can actually transfer these melty beads to the ironing board without tipping them over and create mayhem amongst your beloved offspring! ::cheers::
