Zipped Knitted Sweater

Joe in Zipped Knitted Jacket

Joe models (albeit reluctantly) my latest production from the Fiona McTague book, 'Knits for Children and their Teddies'.

Knitted on 3.5 and 4 mm needles.

I used a Markoma Aran weight acrylic/wool blend yarn in a fawn colour and a navy for contrast on the collar, cuffs and pocket plackets. The original pattern was knitted in one colour, but I prefer the contrast.

See the cool leather-look buttons on the plackets?

Getting the zip in was challenging. I dislike sewing in zips. I ended up pinning it, tacking it and then machining it in.

A note for myself for the future is to remember to sew on the pockets after putting the zip in. Any unevenness on how the fronts are situated will really show up in the pockets if they are placed before sewing in the zip. I had to unpick one pocket and re-situate it.

There is a matching hat which is half done and then I'll start something else - perhaps a sweater for Seb or a scarf for me.

I'm so glad that even though the pain in my right hand has made it virtually impossible for me to embroider, I can still knit!

My mom is the one who deserves all the thanks- she taught me to knit, sew, embroider, crochet and use a sewing machine.

I have no idea what I would do without these skills. Thanks Mom!

Darling Ash- both sweater and child :-) I missed it that you are having trouble with your hand- I hope it gets better soon.

I love the collar! And I am just green with envy that I can't (won't) knit! We discovered lately that it has something to do with a "handwerkjuf" op de basisschool...way back when..
Maybe I should try again? Is it a good idea to show some pictures on my blog of the vest and jacket I made recently?
