Textile Tour of Amsterdam

Amsterdam

Handwerken zonder Grenzen has a great article in their most recent issue about a program for a day of weekend shopping in Amsterdam!

I was overjoyed, as I haven't seen many of these kind of articles on European cities, although I know of this guide online of Paris stitching shops.

I woud love to do that tour someday, but my French is non-existent so I'd need to go with someone who speaks a little French.

The article on Amsterdam was split into sections. I'll just list the URLs here as I don't want to translate or reproduce the entire article.

Knitting/Crochet: De Afstap (also embroidery)

Embroidery: H Bruinink (stitching supplies), and Ex Antiquiteiten (antique samplers)

Quilting and Patchwork: Birdblocks, De Bricoleur, Den Haan & Wagenmakers

Fabric/Haberdashery: A Boeken, Handmade Heaven, Knopenwinkel, McLennan's Pure Silk

Felt: CriCri, Prins Shirdak

I have a trip to Amsterdam planned next week, all on my own! I'll visit some of these stores, The American Bookstore, Waterstones in Amsterdam, Kitsch Kitchen, wander around the Jordaan and then come home.

On a sort of related note, check out the history of the American Book Center on their blog about the proposed store move in October 2006. I also saw yesterday that Sissy Boy Homeland is taking over the entire basement of the Magna Plaza! The Magna Plaza is home to Pinokkio, an awesome store for kids.

If style and home shopping is more your thing, Decor8 did an excerpt from Lucky magazine listing places to shop in Amsterdam.

All this reading about shopping is making me long for winter. We usually visit Amsterdam in autumn and winter, as it's less crowded then and we just like it more.

Simultaneously, I'm wishing summer would stay a bit longer.

Especially as I just got some Reine Claude plums and I'm in heaven. Go and read David's entry from last year about these little green, non-descript but oh-so-delicious plums. Sebastian and I waited all year for them and now we're happily munching.

And finally, some very good news:

Seb saw the neurologist yesterday and we don't have to go back unless there is a big problem! I'm so glad. The possibility of epilepsy hasn't been ruled out, but right now there is nothing that points definitively to it, so we can just get on with our lives until something changes, in which case we just make an appointment and go back.

I'm feeling quite well again. The drinking of bouillion has helped my electrolyte levels get back to normal and I feel more human now.

Lastly, Brad has a week off work next week which will be spent doing fun things like going to Walibi World and the Naturalis in Leiden.

Great news on Seb....

If you'd like some English-language magazines, send me your address and I'll pop them in the mail!
