Mix it up ...

Rowan Flower Applique Quilt Flower quilt from Needlecraft Magazine 2001

Today's post is just a mix of stuff. I've been planting flowers on the balcony and while I had the camera out I took some other pics. The top picture is from the quilt I made when I was pregnant with Joe. The flowers are all needleturn applique. I love how soft this quilt is. It's made using the shot cottons from Kaffe Fassett and the colour changes beautifully in the light.

I'm doing this all the wrong way around from 'how one is supposed to quilt', but it works for me.

I finished the machine quilting, bound the quilt (finally finished off handsewing the binding down) and now I'm working slowly on hand quilting the stars so that they have some relief detail. It's enjoyable but time-consuming. It was perfect for watching the season finale of Lost and the last three episodes of Grey's Anatomy Season 1 last night. I did about half a star in three hours. This way also means I can use the quilt while I'm handquilting it. Otherwise where would I put it?

Verbena in a zinc pot Pink verbena in a black zinc pot

I planted out this verbena into a black zinc pot this morning and I love the colours. Brad says the picture is oversaturated, but that's really the colour they are! I also planted out loads of other flowers - lavender, pinks, more verbena - and I staked the tomato plants and moved them to the other side of the apartment. The wind on our balcony has been awful this week and I'm considering moving the other window boxes to the walkway side of the apartment, at least until the wind changes direction.

Pinks Closeup of the pinks

Did I mention I'm having a pink phase? I have a pink gym bag, a pink handbag, a pink wallet, pink socks, pink flowers and I just ordered a pink Polar F6 heart rate monitor. This matches my pink Diddlina coffee cup and a sudden appreciation for all things girly. It's peculiar, as I hated pink when I was growing up. Funny how things change isn't it?

Next up:

A Mini-Moopy Bunny from Carly Schwerdt via Kiddley. I can't wait to see how this turns out. It means of course that I have to make three of them. One for me and one for each of the kids. The Wee Bunnies are apparently in love and going to have babies. I wonder if they've been busy gestating Mini-Moopy Bunnies while I wasn't looking ;)

I love the flowers and their bright colors - all this grey, wet, windy weather has me craving color! Your quilts are gorgeous. Next time we get together, I must find out more about how you do this. I love quilting, but feel intimidated by it. And your pink phase is a hoot - I also hated pink when I was younger, but I find it a very soothing color to stitch with and am constantly surprised by how often it crops up in my projects!

I know what you mean about pink - when I was younger I hated the color yellow. Now it seems like I'm drawn to the color - just painted my computer/stitching room yellow!

Your quilts are beautiful. I'm in awe of your talent!

I love that patchwork and applique quilt with the shot cottons. It is in a book I have and I have admired it. Looks like you did a wonderful job on it!

I had a pink phase when Bea was a baby too after swearing I wouldn't. I just couldn't help it. She looked so beautiful in pink and it was a slippery slope from there.
