Its Menu Day again - 1 Feb to 7 Feb 2006

This is what happens when one is always late ...

This week's recipes:

Baked goods:
That same carrot cake (which I still haven't made!)
Valentine Cookies

Bobotie is a South African dish which everyone loves and I hardly ever make. Seeing as its really cold this week, its a good week to try it! The kids love chicken kiev and cordon bleu and I make them myself so I know exactly what's in them. Delia's Penne with leeks and bacon is a family favourite and lets see if I can get the kids to try the stir fried beef. They both love broccoli so it might work! The new pizza dough recipe will be great, if I can get it to work - I love that you can freeze the dough ahead. We're making the cookies on the weekend and I'll freeze half the dough for Valentine's day.

This is such fun! I am about to do my menu for the coming week (Wednesday to Thursday), and then head off to Safeway (supermarket) to do the week's shopping. I will post my menu tomorrow, if I think of it.
I have heard of Bobotie; in fact I think I even have the recipe somewhere. Braised chicken with apples sounds nice - want to share that one with us? I am surprised at your comment about the lack of decent fish in Holland - I thought being so close to water, there would have been a good choice. Australia is blessed in that regard; we have an abundance of both seafood and inland river fish.

The bobotie turned into a meatloaf. I am sick at the moment and can't eat much other than dry toast and coffee - gah! So, I figured it would be a complete waste to spend time making bobotie for the rest of the family if I couldn't have any! They all love meatloaf though so no-one complained!

Gina, the fish problem in Holland is a fearsome one. Fish is incredibly expensive - for a meal of cod, hake, any other white fish, I can expect to pay around 16 euros for fresh fish for the four of us - that's at about 150 grams per serving, hardly enough to make it worthwhile.

If we were to use frozen fish the quality would be very variable and even though it would be cheaper - around 9 or 10 euros, it just isn't worth it!

Part of this is because fish in Holland goes to Belgium to be sold. So the fishmongers have to buy fish back from Belgium at an inflated rate. Its all non-sensical and we were also very surprised when we got here and found this to be the case! So fish is very rarely on our menu.

Hey Ash, I am sorry to hear you are unwell; it is not pleasant to have to cook for others while your tummy is turning over...eewww..
Thanks for explaining about your fishy problem (lol) in Holland; that is criminal! But it happens everywhere I guess. We grow heaps of oranges in Victoria but most of them are ploughed back into the ground, as it is cheaper to buy oranges from South America or somewhere, for goodness sake! Every now and then, there is a hue and cry about the injustice of our farmers losing out to overseas trade.
I clicked on the link for Bobotie and have saved it on my favorites list for future reference. I know I have a recipe somewhere, and I also remember cooking something very similar, but this one does sound delish!!
Take care, hope you are better soon.
