Redwork Exchange

Just a quick note to say my Redwork exchange was received in New Zealand! Take a look here at Nicki's blog. I've uploaded some pictures that Nicki too - see how good the light is?
Our light was so poor on the day that I took the photos that it just can't compare to that Southern Hemisphere sunlight!
The piece was stitched on 36 count linen (Permin I think) using VC silk thread in HeartWood. I used a motif from an antique Dutch sampler and alphabets from a sampler book entitled Letterdoeken Borduurpatronen by Jose Sterrenburg, published by Cantecleer Press. The ISBN is 90-213-2148-3. The original sampler, dating back to 1714, that this motif was taken from, is in the Westfries Museum in Hoorn, Netherlands. The alphabets also come from antique samplers worked in Friesland.
I lined the case with silk in two colours, a check for the background and a deep red for the pockets and scissor pocket. The needlepage is wool felt attached with a herringbone stitch. The case was assembled flat in three panels, two sides and bottom, and the side panels were attached into the bottom piece and then sewn up into the sides. I originally used skirtex for stiffening but found it wasn't strong enough so resorted to card. The closure is cord made from DMC thread and looped around a button.
It was fun to make and I loved being part of this exchange!
I LOVE my redwork exchange piece- thank you, thank you! And of course you can use my photos. There's no Southern Hemisphere sun today though - grey and gloomy!
