A Quaker Sewing Case

I made this for the Quaker Exchange on the Legacy board I've been so excited about this piece that I've been beside myself! The parcel arrived at its destination and is now in the hands of its new owner so I can share :)

The design is from the JCS August issue. I changed the colours to Sea and Sand for the exchange and as I didn't have any ultrasuede I made a silk pocket for the scissors. I used a Gloriana silk bits and pieces bag, and Permin Vintage 35 ct fabric. The cord is made from DMC thread and the tassels are made of a Vikki Clayton silk perle.

I had so much fun making it! I love the way it turned out and I'm thinking of making another one now in a different colour combination.

The first picture shows the front, the second shows the hows the back closed, holding the scissors and the third shows the back open showing the needlepages. The top of the needlepage cover closes by attaching the buttonhole loop over one of the pins in the top.

The assembly was relatively easy. The pieces are trimmed to about an inch beyond the template size and then gathered with a running stitch, the piece is then put onto the padded templates and the gathering threads pulled until it fits. All the pockets are sewn onto the pieces before they are assembled onto the templates.

I used a new glue from Pritt, which is a fabric glue in their usual glue stick offering, which made it very easy to apply the adhesive to the board for the batting to be stuck down. I would imagine a spray adhesive would work well too. I would have been irritated if I had used my usual fabric adhesive because of the messiness.

The only thing that proved to be annoying was that I didn't leave enough space down the one end of one of the fabric pieces, so I really had to fiddle with it to get it onto the template. So, if you make this - be sure to have at least one inch space around your stiched pieces on all sides.
