Feeling Fruity?

I mentioned this recipe on Amy's blog in the comments and promised to post it here and this is it. Its taken originally from Marguerite Patten's Hamlyn's Family Cookbook published in 1975, ISBN number 0 600 33555 0. Its a great book for family cooking. Even though some of the recipes seem dated one can always change them to be a little bit more up to date.
Apple (or any Fruit) Crumble
- Put about 1/2 kilo (1 lb) prepared (peeled, cored, whatever) fruit into a glass dish. I use a souffle dish.
- Cover with clingfilm or a lid and microwave on high. I do four minutes at 900 W for apples. You don't need to pre-cook berry fruits. If in doubt, microwave for 2 minutes, take them out and check and then proceed accordingly.
- Sprinkle fruit with sugar if necessary.
- Top with a crumble mixture made by rubbing 2 oz (50g or 1/4 cup) butter or margarine into 4 oz (100g, 1 cup) flour until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. You don't have to be too fussy about it.
- Add 3 oz (75 g, generous 1/3 cup) sugar.
- Sprinkle the crumble over the fruit, neaten with a knife and bake for approximately 35 minutes in the centre of a very moderate to moderate oven (325 - 350F, 170 - 180C) until firm and golden brown.
- Serves 4 generously topped with custard, creme fraiche or vanilla ice cream
