I love Africa

I love the smell of rain hitting dusty earth in the first rains of the season, rippling its sweet scent through my body. Sudden raindrops falling while the sun still shines. Thunderclouds towering into the sky and the urge to offer myself to the rain.

I love the dust of winter, and the cold clear mornings. The blue sky stretching endlessly above and the ground covered with a thin layer of crackling frost. The sunlight, warming the earth as the day grows, the earth abruptly turning cold as the sun sets.

The smells of Africa, maize meal cooking over an open fire, air thick with smoke, the scents of animals and people intermingled. The smell of dust and the smell of life.

I love the people, darker or lighter, rich or poor, bursting with life. Africa, pious and pagan, rich and poor, the cradle of life.

The love I have for Africa swells in my chest and I feel as though my heart will burst.

I love Africa, land of my birth, home to my heart.

(Edited to say that the DH was wondering what prompted this outburst so I thought I had better explain. There was a competition on BBC News for 'I love Africa' entries, and this was mine.)
